Itti L et al., proposed a novel framework for efficient saliency-based visual attention in rapid scene analysis. The research was published in the IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis & Machine Intelligence journal in 1998.

Itti and Koch have conducted extensive research on computational modeling as a tool for analyzing visual attention in Nature Reviews Neuroscience (Itti L and Koch C 2001 Nat. Rev. Neurosci. 2(3) 194).
